Read Bone

Post by anarky »

This may be the greatest graphic novel of all time. It's not as historically significant as The Dark Knight Returns, but it is infinitely better.

If you've read it, you know what I mean.

If not, sign the fuck off the computer and get a copy now.

I read the first 20 issues or so. I desperately want the single volume collection.

And how cool would it be as a Live Action/Animated film? Think about it.

Animated Bones, Animatronic/CGI dragons and Stupid Stupid Rat Creatures, and the delicious Kiera Knightly playing Thorn...

I'm buying my ticket now.

The one-volume edition came back into print last month, and amazon.com has it for $27.

I think if it's animated, Adam Corolla should voice Phoney, using the same voice he uses for Spanky Ham (very slightly different from his normal voice).

You have the advantage of color.

I had the advantage of reading the whole motherfucker in one volume.

How far does Vol 3 go? As in "what happened at the end"? I just want to get a feel for where you are.

Well I just finished the 2nd TPB, and Rose is discussing with the bar owner what & what not to tell Thorn. She hasn't yet reached the turning, apparently.

The humor is fine, but I find myself ever so curious about the greater goings on. Off to start book 3.....

Okay, it's still way too early for you to know any of the "bigger things" yet. :)

How many of the small paperbacks are there? A few hundred?

9 volumes apparently, so I'll be a third of the way done by the time I go to bed tonight. My wife gets them for 40% off, so I'm going to have to badger her to bring the next couple of books home after payday. :D

Bone: The Movie?
Warner Bros. Picks Up Bone Comic
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
March 8, 2008

Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to "Bone," the acclaimed independent comic book series from artist Jeff Smith, says The Hollywood Reporter. Dan Lin will produce.

The fantasy series followed three cousins from the Bone family who are small, white and bald humanlike creatures with big noses. The trio are run out of their hometown and find themselves in a mysterious valley where they are separated and hunted by other creatures. They are taken in by a girl named Thorn and her grandmother, and find out that the valley is threatened by an evil force called the Lord of the Locusts.

The series ran irregularly from 1991-2004. Scholastic has been publishing the collected stories in graphic novel format since 2005, selling more than 1 million copies so far.

A decision on what kind of format "Bone" should take -- live-action or animated or both -- will be based on filmmaker meetings.

An animated version was in development at Nickelodeon Films but fell through, partly because Smith was displeased that the studio was aiming it for kids and wanted the film to include pop songs.

Visit the official "Bone" website for more info.

Pray for animation. Not kiddie-styled animation, but animation. This would be tough as hell to pull off in live-action.

It would amazing in animated form. I'm visualizing the characters being very sharp, and rendered in 2D - but shaded so they look 3D (if that makes any sense).

The backgrounds I'd have a bit more sketchy and faded, softly coloured. I'd also start the show in B&W (as an homage to Jeff Smith's original uncoloured art), then move towards colour (let's say the first coloured thing is Thorn in the pool, for example). As the story progressed, the colours would get brighter to reflect the growing intensity of the story.... and then they'd fade back out a little bit after the crisis was abated.

Sadly, I still have no idea how this story pans out - Vol. 8 won't be released again until August, and the publisher still doesn't have a date for vol. 9. Add the first 7 volumes to my re-read list from the other thread as I'll need to go through them again to finish the story the right way.

I can't remember - have we talked voices yet?

Fone Bone - Michael Cera
Phoncible - Seth Rogan
Smiley - Hmmmm... I'm thinking the kid who plays Hanna Montana's brother on the that show, with the same "Goofy" southern accent
Thorn - Charlize Theron
Roque Ja - James Earl Jones
Rose - Aunt May from the new Spidey movies
Rose's sister - Juliet Lewis
Lucius the Bartender - Sam Eliot

I was thinking Gilbert Gottfried as Phoney. I'm 100% serious.

He could very well do it - I was hearing Rogan's gravelly excited voice - not his normal speaking one - so we're on a similar wavelength.

I see that book ALL the time, and never have enough cash to drop on it. I read the first 25 issues or so, but then it went into that weird sporadic shipping schedule and then I stopped collecting altogether. I would love to see a live action/animated blend with heavy use of Henson like animatronics for the SSRC and such. The Bones would be straight ANIMATION.

This is going to ROCK!!!!
