What have you watched lately?

movies are cool. here is a place to talk about how cool they are. or maybe how much they suck, sometimes. like that fucking piece of shit 'mac and me'. worst fucking movie ever, a two-hour ad for fucking coca-cola.

Free HBO weekend. So far I've seen the Scientology documentary (kind of scary).

X-Men: Days of Future Past was really good even though I'm not familiar with all of the characters.

A Million Ways to Die in the West was better than I expected. I'll agree with Tom Foolery from several pages back about the vulgar Mel Brooks vibe to it.

Gross Point Blank - Haven't seen this one in a bout 15 years. Good soundtrack. Seeing it again solved a problem I've been having for years. Ever remember part of a song, but can't remember the song's name? For me, it was White Lines by Grandmaster Flash.

Hobbit - Five Armies: Glad I finally saw it. I think I liked the LOTR trilogy more than the Hobbit trilogy. It seems like they tried too hard in the Hobbit movies. More hero deaths than I expected. That said, I'm not even sure if I even read the book.

Tommy Boy - Still hilarious 20 years later. Jesus, 20 years...

Daredevil Season One - As mentioned elsewhere.

Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor - Had planned on watching all 10 Marvel flicks before Age of Ultron. This is as far as I got. Not a lot of Iron Man in Iron Man. Hulk is better than I remember (but still the worst Marvel flick). Iron Man 2 gets too much shit for being an Avengers prequel. Thor is fun, but the small town in New Mexico setting shows that the bulk of the budget went to the Asgard stuff.

Pathfinder - Karl Urban flick about Native American vs Vikings. Historical inaccuracies everywhere!

Atari: Game Over - Uses the "archaeological" dig to see if Atari ET cartridges were really buries in a landfill to explain the rise and fall of Atari. Short (just over an hour), but interesting.

Avengers: Age of Ultron - Small idie flick.

Hesher - Joseph Gordon Levitt, Natalie Portman and Rainn Wilson flick. Basically a dark comedy heavy metal Mary Poppins. Even as a plain, poor white girl with big glasses Natalie Portman is smokin' hot.

Ex Machina. A billionaire (think Zuckerberg + Howard Hughes) hires a guy to test his new AI robot girl to see if she can pass for human. The movie then descends into a thriller because nobody is being honest. It was enjoyable.
And also there was lots of full frontal naked chicks in it.

Chicks or robot chicks? Either way, who am I to question or judge?

Friday Night Lights - all 5 seasons. Think Dawson's Creek with football or perhaps Glee.... with more football and less singing.

They're robot chicks designed to look like actual humans and they aren't wearing clothes.
Also, they were played by actresses not wearing clothes.

That is a semantic argument.

Mad Max: Fury Road. I'll be the first person to say the old Mad Max movies are overrated. Especially the first ultra low budget one. Road Warrior is decent. Thunderdome is kinda limp. Granted I haven't watched them in awhile.
But this movie was pretty badass. It's one gigantic car chase through the desert. The Namibian desert locations on the big screen are outstanding. Like Gibson before him, Hardy doesn't have much to say as Max. And i watched it with people who had no knowledge of Mad Max or the previous films and they had no trouble with the plot.
Highly recommend it.

Bessie. I was looking forward to it. I know I'm a weirdo, but Bessie Smith is one of my favorite singers, and Queen Latifah was a great choice to play her. It turned out to be more a bunch of disjointed scenes than a story, heavy on the melodrama. And for all the hubbub about Queen Latifah's nude scene being so important and necessary, it was pointless, and no one needed to see them old saggy titties.

More importantly, though, how the literal fuck do you imply a fucking happy ending to this story? She hits bottom, falls out of favor, pulls herself together, records a comeback single (oddly omitted here, given that it's about overcoming adversity)... and then almost immediately dies in a fucking car crash. No mention of that at all. We're left thinking she lived a wonderful life and got to hear Eric Clapton cover her songs, or something.

Not awful, but not good. Excellent music; as you'd expect, QL trying to channel Bessie Smith sounds very good. (No substitute for the real thing, though.)

Over the weekend I watched Blazing Saddles (again). Still classic. I also saw Wall-E for the first time.

Holy shit! I literally watched Blazing Saddles 3 hours ago! It's strange to think that came out the year I was born.

I also watched the Back to the Future trilogy over the weekend. It's 2015. The year they travel to in the future. Where are the fucking hover boards Mattel?!

I didn't see any flying cars in those photos. I saw airplanes. Which the Wright Bros already came up with.
